HIVQUAL-Kenya History
With an estimated 1.3 million of its citizens living with HIV/AIDS, ART is now available to more than 150,000 of the approximately 275,000 Kenyans eligible to receive treatment. In the contxt of ongoing ART rollout and the large human resources challenges faced by the country's health system, the quality of HIV care is a major priority in Kenya.

In 2008, discussions began between the HIVQUAL International team and CDC-Kenya to introduce HIVQUAL in Kenya. Linkages are also being made with the nearby HIVQUAL-Uganda team to provide coaching and mentoring as HIVQUAL-Kenya gets its start.

Kenya: Country Background

Home to almost 38 million people, Kenya is located
in East Africa. The HIV prevalence is 8% for adult
women, and 4% for adult men. Although the HIV
epidemic in Kenya is severe, in recent years the
national HIV prevalence has declined, atrributable to
changes in behavior and increased access to ART.
Current vulnerable groups include injection drug
users, sex workers, pregnant women and young
women ages 15-24. All provincial and district
hospitals provide comprehensive HIV treatment
including ART.
