HIVQUAL in Botswana
In late 2007, meetings were held in Botswana between HIVQUAL-International and key stakeholders in the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Local Government and CDC-Botswana (BOTSUSA). Meetings were also held with key UNICEF staff to discuss collaboration and coordinate with their 2008-2009 country plan. Plans were discussed to expand the HIVQUAL model beyond HIV care into well-child care.
A spirit of collaboration has been established between all stakeholders including the MOH, MOLG, UNICEF, BOTSUSA and WHO. A coaching and mentoring team has been identified, and a plans to establish a core HIVQUAL team and develop a workplan are underway. In August, 2008, key officials from the MOH, the MOLG, UNICEF and BOTSUSA visited New York City for a week-long Study Tour providing them in-depth and hands-on knowledge of quality improvement and its implementation in HIV care facilities.

Botswana: Country Background
Located in southern Africa, Botswana is home to approximately 1.7 million people, 300,000 of which are estimated to be living with HIV/AIDS. 24% of Botswanans over the age of 15 are thought to be HIV-positive. Among pregnant women attending antenatal clinics, the prevalence is estimated to be more than 30%.
Despite its comparatively high GDP per capita compared to other nations in sub-Saharan Africa, the large proportion of individuals infected with HIV has had a large economic impact and has created a heavy burden for the healthcare system, support services and ARV rollout.
